Houses of rural Japan are left unlocked while you are at home and visitors usually open the door and say hello rather than knock and wait outside. While we were there, one of the neighbours came over to bring us homemade mochi; sticky cakes made from rice pounded into paste and formed around sweet red beans. This green variety kusa mochi is flavoured with a plant called yomogi. Amazingly tasty, we ate these having toasted them under the grill…
