Japan, Travel

One thing that I thought might be nice to tell you also was about another form of carved figurine common to see in both urban and rural Japan, Jizo 地蔵 (lit. Earth Treasure). These are guardians of people, especially children, which is why you often see them wearing bibs and bonnets. Atsuko’s mum told us something nice this morning, that when she was a child, she was told that the reason you see babies smiling in their sleep is because Jizo is playing with them.
