In Bermondsey, not far from London Bridge, St John’s Bakery occupies one of the arches under the railway on Druid Street, open for business only on Saturday. Monmouth Coffee have one of the arches too but a police forensic-squad dust-down of the street outside (!) had temporarily closed them down.
The bakery is quite dramatic in it’s setting and design which is impressively simple. Beautiful bread displayed on wheeled cases in an empty tunnel. The staff were really friendly and after a short wait behind the local regulars, we bought a lovely (100%) rye-bread loaf.
