Tadao Ando – Silence

It is a little predictable I guess but I do love Tadao Ando(安藤忠雄), the buildings of his I visited in Japan were incredible to experience and I even had the pleasure of meeting him once. I have a few of his books, all un-read sadly due to the kanji, but all signed by the man himself even with a sketch or two. Actually one of them is signed to ‘Joe-Joe’ and to this day I have never really known how that happened…!

Anyway today I went to see Silence, his first work in the UK, a beautiful fountain outside the Connaught Hotel in London. The shallow calm water circles two trees on the Mayfair street and just under the surface lies a pattern of pristine glass discs. The fountain’s ‘plus-alpha’ is that every once in a while a white mist envelopes the whole area, which, had it not been quite windy today, would have made it the most atmospheric street installation I have seen. I also suspect they have limited the mist to prevent a sudden, dangerous cloud covering the tight corner on Carlos Place.
