I have never been either good at, nor keen on, the fine art of bargaining and haggling; but then, I had never been market shopping with Atsuko, her dad and sister before. Whereas the whole process would ordinarily make me slightly tense, their strategy in the Grand Bazaar was to relax, take their time, enjoy apple-tea and gradually get the products and prices they were happy with. I was deeply impressed and for the first time ever, I actually enjoyed the bartering with market vendors. Atsuko’s father in particular seemed a seasoned professional when it came to doing battle with the calculator. It was a lot of fun.
