Holy Wisdom

I think my strongest memories from my original Istanbul trip, all those years ago, was of the Hagia Sophia. How could such an incredible building be designed and made so long ago, in 537? Throughout its history, this amazing building has been both a Roman Catholic Cathedral and a Mosque and it has survived war and earthquakes alike. It was a joy to be back inside this, for thousands of years considered the largest enclosed space ever built but I still had no answers to those questions of how?

The way this building has been adapted and reinforced over the years has left the interior relatively dark on the lowest level. Most of the little light there is, comes from forty windows puncturing the base of the dome itself. We had only about an hour in here, but I think we could have stayed for days, watching and wondering…
