Yeah it was raining and despite it being close to our office, it took ages to find and even when we stood in front of the building we couldn’t find the door! Once finally inside all I kept thinking was, I can’t believe we didn’t ever know about this place. The easiest way to describe it is as the website says “St Bride Library, Fleet Street, London is the largest library for printing, publishing and the graphic arts in the English-speaking world.”
It’s that and even much more; they run lectures, book-binding and printing workshops and classes. They publish their own journal called ULTRABOLD which I am likely to subscribe to. They have over 4km of shelving holding some of the most important and historical books in history. At this event we were allowed in to see the printing machines and even got to print a small keepsake to take away. Working for a design studio that has an obvious love of craft, this was an extremely exciting discovery. To this day, I have no idea how the invitation landed on my desk but I am glad to have been introduced to this whole new world, right on our doorstep.
