Topography of Terror

After a walk through the city still struggling with the scale of our map, we accidentally found the longest remaining section of the outer wall as the sun began to slip from the sky. Despite watching the wall’s history at distance throughout our lives, it was still a shock to see a city divided for real and actually surprising for us (in our naivety) to realise that the Berlin Wall was actually 2 walls with a large void between, but more about this another day…

Here again we were exposed to Berlin’s dramatic contrasts. On this one site stood multiple layers of painful history; running alongside the wall were the remaining basement cells of the Gestapo and SS head-quarters destroyed by bombs in WW2. Opposite these reminders of past torture and execution stood a spectacular, solid yet transparent building with a clearly edited and well structured exhibition documenting crimes of the SS and Hitler’s Third Reicht. Looking through some of the terrible images in the exhibition, I think we both felt, while not your typical holiday activity, we were really glad to be able to experience this for ourselves. I wouldn’t know how to express these kind of things in words but anyway, I don’t suppose I shouldn’t even try.
