Cross Bones Memorial Gate

There is always a lot of building works in and around London Bridge, visitors to Borough Market will have noticed the new Thameslink train slicing through buildings, high above the streets. About 20 years ago, construction work in this area uncovered a burial ground, later known to have been a medieval cemetery for ‘single women’ or prostitutes. Controversial of course, around 150 bodies of young women, children and even tiny babies have been uncovered here. Thanks to public support, the site has since achieved protected status and there is now an amazing, growing shrine for the souls laid to rest here on Redcross Way.

The red gates are covered with ribbons, flowers and messages; a moving shrine to the outcast…
