I Am Here

Atsuko had some weekend-work to prepare for her company’s Paris fashion show today. I too had to be up early to return a rental-car and went straight into the city afterwards to make the most of a frosty, crisp and sunny morning. I walked over 10km today, all along Regent’s Canal from near Whitechapel to Stoke Newington.

After Broadway Market and Haggerston, I came across a building whose windows were mostly boarded or bricked up. When buildings fall into disrepair like this, the negative impact multiple boarded windows can have on the surrounding neighbourhood can start a downward spiral. To combat this effect, while the area is in a state of regeneration, photographs of real residents have been pasted over the blocked windows. Not only does this brighten an otherwise depressing situation, it projects positivity and a strong sense of community, reminding passers-by that real characters still live in the area. Though very simple, I thought it was extremely clever.

More about the project here.
